This equipment was designed and manufactured during a previous CenTiRe funded project to characterize and verify tire tread / road surface dynamic friction. It is currently being adapted for use in the currently funded project on multi-scale modeling of tire wear.
The equipment consists of a rotating disk that can have sandpaper or a 3D printed surface to simulate the road. A rotating rubber disk specimen is loaded against the surface disk. The rotation of the road surface and specimen are controlled by separate motors so that longitudinal slip can be specified in the range of +/- 15% at a velocity of 0.05m/s to 2m/s.
Friction is calculated from measurements of vertical and longitudinal forces. Wear is determined by weighing the rubber specimen at intervals in the test.
